Hi,
The PAR is currently being reviewed in preparation for
the NESCOM meeting on March 30th.
One issue that came up is that they asked that the scope
and purpose to address the the scope and purpose of the
standard rather than the revision. This reflects changes
in what was put in these fields as ironically due to
some quirks in the process the PAR ended up with the
scope and purpose from the previous PAR - which also
reflects what is currently written in the standard.
I have proposed to NESCOM that we change to the revised
text I show below. To generate this text, I extracted
text from both the abstract and introduction that is
part of the 1076-2008 document. I also note that they like
to have acronyms spelled out so that people who are not
in DASC will understand the scope and purpose - hence,
I made sure VHDL and VHSIC were spelled out.
Revised Scope:
This standard defines the syntax and semantics of the
VHSIC Hardware Description Language (VHDL).
The acronym, VHSIC (Very High Speed Integrated Circuits),
in the language's name comes from the U.S. government program
that funded early work on the standard.
Revised Purpose:
VHDL is a formal notation intended for use in all phases of
the creation of electronic systems. Since it is both machine
and human readable, it supports the design, development,
verification, synthesis, and testing of hardware designs;
the communication of hardware design data; and the maintenance,
modification, and procurement of hardware.
This document is intended for the implementers of tools
supporting the language and the advanced users of the language.
--------
It is my expectation that they will accept this and approve
the PAR on March 30th.
Best,
Jim
