Thanks for your efforts. I wasn't looking for a package to be defined, I was asking whether such a package had been considered or a proprietary implementation might be available that could be used as the starting point for a standard package. The main goal of my inquiry was to establish a scope, as it's easy to get carried away with matrix operations.
 
Since the matrix package is one of the projects of the planned revision of 1076.1, I'll take your code as such a starting point. Once we have a better understanding of the issues we'll present it to this forum for review.
