This is probably the best route, the modular way is "safer" but might not be as quick to implement in conforming tools, with more burden on the compliance tests as well... I would prefer the modular implementation, for practical application, because dealing with widths different from 32 bits requires a number of explicit masks that are managed automatically by the modular type.
