I'd envisage the error to be much like any current error (like adding 1 to some_subtype'high).

One comment though : the "error" result...

we're speaking in another thread about driver resolution with integers,
- how do you encode the error,
- what is the overhead,
- is it necessary ?

(i don't know any language or processor that traps on boolean
operations)

In this case, the "modular type" makes more sense to me.
