Why don't the companies understand they need to support this effort?
After all, EVERY EDA company collects maintenance payments from their
customers. A fraction of that should be contributed to future standards
development (via whatever organization does the work). That way the
users themselves are subsidizing the future standards work. How much
should each user contribute? $100/yr/seat seems reasonable to me. Sell a
VHDL simulation license or a synthesis license then you should be
**morally obligated** to contribute to the standards development --
because your company benefited from the standard (you sold licenses/made
a profit) and because the users want it and have **already** given you
the money for it.
It isn't a question of patronage which you have to politely request. It
should be nothing short of a very clear demand. They are obligated to
contribute. If they aren't contributing then we (the people) should be
writing angry letters to top management at all the companies demanding
they do so. Our (user) patronage should then go to the companies who
fund standards development in open, honest and direct ways. Give me the
list of email/mail addresses and I'll write letters today.
Also, I'd be happy to send $200/yr (or less :-) to whatever funding
vessel is selected and not for any influence whatsoever.
If the IEEE is not directly funding the development work then how can
they claim to be a standards development organization? Sticking with the
IEEE provides no benefit (am I right??) at all. My vote would be to take
the standard away from IEEE forever.
