to_string seems to duplicate 'image to some extent; could 'image be
improved instead?

How about for constants? It would be useful to choose a value based on
other constants, generics etc. It would be simpler than writing a
function to make the same decision.

That doesn't seem like the same thing really. Reading output ports seems
useful for avoiding delta races at least.
