Upcoming dates to note:
2011-09-21 - SV-DC meeting
2011-10-01 - P1800 TC work ends

AK: We have done an internal review of 3724.

FM: I am a bit confused about the BNF and packed dimensions.

GV: implicit_data_type in the BNF is for optional packed dimensions. People objected to wording using "explicit." I am open to specific wording that will improve the clarity.

FM: When you have an interconnect it can either be nets that are packed or nets that are unpacked but not both. I couldn't see anything in the proposal that states this.

GV: It would have to go the other way around. If you want it to be more general you would have to state that. The LRM doesn't allow you to connect packed to unpacked. Ideally, in the long term we would like to generalize interconnect so that you don't have to match dimensions. Right now there isn't any generalization, so it just uses the current rules which requires that they have the same shape. Part of it is for terminal connections. The rest of the places we talk about net connections talk about dimensions matching. It doesn't quite appeal to the type compatibility rules. In 23.3.3.5 we find those rules. It doesn't apply to type rules. It only applies to sizing. I believe that is tight enough for non-terminal connections. FM is concerned that if we needed to apply to matching or equivalent type then we would have to define that for interconnect. Since it doesn't, then we are okay.

FM: That talks about unpacked array ports, but it doesn't talk about packed interconnect ports. I don't see how this section of the LRM can apply to interconnect.

GV: Are they not arrays? If they are arrays then the rules apply.

FM: This doesn't apply to interconnect ports with packed dimensions.

GV: When you get to that point you are following the normal rules for vector port connections.

FM: Are you treating unpacked vs. packed interconnect differently?

GV: Yes. It is just like a unpacked or packed net as far as the matching and connection works. The only difference is how you do the net merging. Everything else follows the standard net and port rules.

FM: I will need to read the proposal with this in mind.

GV: Read with the fact that we aren't going to add the special rules. The normal rules apply.

Vote to approve 3398: GV, FM
10y:0n:1a Dave Cronauer abstained because he isn't familiar with the details of the proposal
