I have no idea how old any of you folk are, but I
strongly suspect this is a generation-gap thing.
Just for the record: The requirement for Oxford
science undergraduates to have a qualification in
Latin was lifted only one year before I started my
physics degree... and now I am learning, slowly and
painfully, that I must avoid using Latin words and
abbreviations in anything for public consumption.

Sic transit gloria mundi :-)
