I don't like this proposal as well, at least at this time. For 1800-2008, I'd really like to see a higher degree of pain relief to justify any enhancement. I don't think the ROI for this feature is high enough to justify the added complexity it introduces to the language. It also makes it more difficult to generate useful error messages when there are syntax errors because of the additional productions.
