Tom opened the meeting at 9am.
1. Standard packages working group
----------------------------------
Ernst Christen presented a paper, co-authored with Alan Mantooth, on the draft
VHDL 1076.1 standard packages for multi energy domain support at the FDL
conference last Wednesday. A copy of the slides will be put in the 1076.1 web
site.
The PAR form for the creation of a new working group with the charter to
standardize the packages has been submitted to the DASC for approval. After
minor corrections are brought to the document, the PAR form should be quickly
approved by the DASC and then sent to the IEEE NesCom committee. The
contemplated NesCom deadline is October 26.
The first meeting of the new working group is scheduled at the BMAS workshop
(October 8-10). Contact Alan Mantooth, chair (mantooth@engr.uark.edu), for
more information. The 1076.1 reflector will be used for all email exchanges
regarding the package standardization.
2. VHDL 1076.1 PLI
------------------
Ernst did again the same presentation as in the last meeting in Las Vegas (see
minutes of June 22). Ernst put a motion to create a subcommittee in the 1076.1
working group with the charter to develop analog and mixed-signal extensions
to the VHDL PLI. Tom Kazmierski seconded. The motion passed with 6 approvals
and one abstention (two meeting participants were only observers). The
subcommittee chair is Martin Vlach (mvlach@lynguent.com).
3. VHDL RF & Microwave study group
----------------------------------
Dennis Soderberg gave an update on behalf of John Willis, study group chair.

for a copy of the slides.
Dave Barton expressed his concern about the complexity of the task (i.e.
addressing RF to microwave), in the light of his past experience in the MHDL
effort. Alain Vachoux worried that the requirement gathering seems to mainly
address the needs of the microwave engineer community, while the SoC design
community might be rather concerned with RF issues. Ernst recalled that one
important issue that has been raised during the 1076.1 balloting process was
the lack of frequency modeling support.
The meeting members agreed that the 1076.1 working group will not do anything
regarding RF and microwave issues for the moment, except to react to whatever
comes out from the VHDL RF and microwave study group.
The study group email reflector does not seem to be operational.
4. VHDL 1076.1 real-time subset
-------------------------------
Eduard Moser recalled his proposal to define a real-time subset of VHDL
1076.1. Eduard submitted a draft document last year (see
http://www.eda-twiki.org/vhdlams/ftp_files/wp/rt_subset_draft.txt). Eduard
approached The MathWorks company (creator of Matlab) to present the VHDL
1076.1 language and to figure out if the language, and its real-time subset,
might be of interest for them. The company did not express any interest for
the moment, but the DSP community, that uses Matlab heavily, may push for VHDL
1076.1 in the future. Eduard also approached the car maker community, mainly
in Germany. Needs for easy model interchange are here, but the community is
waiting for more mature VHDL 1076.1 tools. Eduard said he will continue to
promote VHDL 1076.1 in the community.
5. AOB
------
None.
7. Next Meeting
---------------
The date of the next 1076.1 working group meeting is not yet fixed. HDLCon in
March 2002 is a possible time frame.
Tom adjourned the meeting at 10:10am.
