2011-09-21 - SV-DC meeting
2011-10-01 - P1800 TC work ends

Agenda:
0. IEEE patent policy [http://standards.ieee.org/board/pat/pat-slideset.ppt]
Please review these slides prior to the meeting if needed.
1. Discussion of Shalom's comments on 3398
2. Discussion of mantis 3724 (generic interconnect) [http://www.eda-twiki.org/svdb/view.php?id=3724]
3. Discussion of using nets of user-defined nettypes with switch elements
4. Opens

0. SL reminded the members of the IEEE patent policy.

SL summarized an e-mail from Neil Korpusik. He highlighted the following paragraph:

The technical committees are encouraged to ensure that any proposals that
get resolved are of high quality. The schedule doesn't contain a lot of
slack for iterating between the Champions and the technical committees
beyond the Oct 1st feature freeze date.

1. Discussion of Shalom's comments on 3398

SL: Let me go through the various e-mails to avoid missing something. Is the bit select concern clear enough?

SB: Yes

GV: From my point of view there are 3 main issues.
1. The net_port_type BNF issue which we should fix as Shalom suggests.
2. The default initialization of an undriven net of user-defined nettype which we need to discuss
3. Additional wording at the beginning of Clause 6.7. Gord worked with Shalom on the wording and will send to Francoise.

There was additional discussion regarding point 2. It was decided to add a note that highlights that nets of user-defined nettypes may have a different default initialization than an "equivalent" built-in net.

There was some discussion of whether additional clarification on continuous assignment is needed. It was determined that it should be inferred from the existing text and no additional clarification is needed for nets of user-defined nettypes.

SL: What about the comment to move the matching nettypes section into the matching types section?

It was decided that while similar it is best left as a separate section.

SB: I still have a concern regarding the wording 'default data types'.

There was no agreement reached to change the text. We will leave the text as is. SB won't veto the proposal for the imprecise phrasing. In the proposal Table 6.7 should be Table 6-7.

SB left.

FM will make the edits discussed today and wait for SB to finish his review. After the final edits, we can do an e-mail vote.

2. Discussion of mantis 3724 (generic interconnect) [http://www.eda-twiki.org/svdb/view.php?id=3724]

There was discussion regarding the rules for connecting generic interconnect to an array of instances. GV advocated keeping the rules simple and only allowing connections when sizes match exactly. This restriction results in the restriction that disallows variable connections to interconnect. GV stated that he believes these restrictions won't cause problems down the road. Once we have a better idea of how interconnect will be used and the various issues we can relax the restrictions.

We discussed the restriction against unconnected interconnect. It was conjectured that vendors would allow it, but the restriction is acceptable. There aren't strong use cases to force us to deal with that definition.

Several readers found the language about implicit_data_type on the top of page 2 confusing. Gord will try to improve the language and run it by Shalom.

SL: We are getting close to the end. Do we need to tentatively schedule another meeting?

GV: I can make the next schedule meeting. The rest of September is difficult for me including the final scheduled meeting. Maybe we can meet in early October.

SL: Ok, I guess the moral of the story is that we need to try to get the work done ASAP.

3. Discussion of using nets of user-defined nettypes with switch elements

SL: I gained some insight about the problem today during Steven's discussion of port & terminals. I don't think it is plausible to address the issue in this PAR.

GV: I see the value. We will likely do something for tran, tranif eventually.

Additional discussion touched on the difficulty of users doing it themselves. It isn't likely possible. The tricky part is getting the resolution function correct.
