I would like to respond to the comment,
"Performance: There may be a performance penalty, but performance hotspots can be debugged. I would much rather have a performance risk than a false-positive risk."
Performance problems should not be treated lightly.
They can be very difficult and take a lot of time to debug.
They can be very difficult and sometimes virtually impossible to reasonably work around.
In fact, we have a design right now with a months-old assertion performance problem that we still have not resolved.
